Founded in October 2002, RESEARCHNETWORK is an interactive forum for social science research debate, collaboration, networking, sharing ideas and experiences in forging a professional identity as professional social science researchers. In addition, information will be shared on forthcoming events such as conferences, new publications / reports / abstracts, training workshops, international courses, projects, job announcements, web sites, research funding, information technology resources, training opportunities, internships and employment opportunities, etc pertaining to social science research. The discussion list was launched to serve the need for a supportive environment for South African social science researchers in the early stages of their professional development (entry level being registration for a masters degree) to establish contact with each other. It currently has approximately 40 e-mail subscribers.
Once subscribed, the participant receives every email sent to the list and can also send messages to the entire membership by sending an email to the appropriate e-mail address. The participant will continue receiving e-mail messages from the fellow group members until they "unsubscribe" from the list. In this way the resource will hopefully help to keep the new local generation of researchers in contact with developments in academia and to create a sense of togetherness and mutual support. Their contributions will obviously also help to shape and develop the discussion resource into a format that will suit their needs.
