School Safety Project
This was part of a semester course in public health research, safety promotion and community psychology. In this results - oriented project MA Psychology students from Unisa and Wits, registered in various categories (Community, Clinical and Research) were committed, working together under supervision of Mr Gath Stevens - a researcher at the Institute for Social and Health Sciences, to elaborating an agenda for safety promotion. Members of this big team were organized into three groups. These groups were however not seen as categories that stand apart from each other, but integral parts of the project. Each was doing a part but all subordinating prominence to the efficiency of the whole. Group one was basically responsible for the implementation of intervention programme, Group two surveyed pertinent literature and Group three evaluated the intervention programme implemented by Group one. Here students from diverse backrounds were inspired to reach their greatest potential TOGETHER! Focus in this project was on one of large secondary schools around Johannesburg. We presented the findings of the project to the school's staff and pupils and the management of the institute for social and health sciences on the 30th of October 2001, at Lenasia (Johannesburg).
